Melamine vs Plywood Cabinets: What’s the Difference?

Melamine vs Plywood Cabinets: What’s the Difference?

When choosing custom cabinets, Melamine and Plywood are often compared. However, they are not exactly the same type of material.

Melamine generally refers to the decorative surface applied to a board, while Plywood is a structural panel made by bonding multiple layers of wood veneer. This is why you should look beyond the surface and ask what material is used inside the cabinet panels.

Melamine: Practical and Affordable

Melamine is available in many colours and woodgrain designs, making it suitable for modern, minimalist and natural interiors. Its smooth surface is easy to clean, and it is usually the more budget-friendly option.

However, its durability depends on the core board and the quality of the edge banding. If damaged edges are exposed to water for a long time, the board may swell. Proper sealing is especially important around the sink area.

Melamine is suitable for:

  • Everyday household cabinets
  • Budget-conscious renovations
  • Rental properties
  • Homeowners who want more colour and design choices

Plywood: Strong and Stable

Plywood is made by bonding thin layers of wood in alternating directions. This structure generally provides better stability, load-bearing capacity and screw-holding strength.

Plywood is often more moisture-resistant than standard particleboard, but it is not completely waterproof. Its performance still depends on the plywood grade, adhesive quality, surface finish and edge sealing.

Plywood is suitable for:

  • Long-term homes
  • Frequently used kitchens
  • Cabinets storing heavier items
  • Homeowners who prioritise strength and durability

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose Melamine if you value affordability, easy maintenance and a wider selection of finishes.

Choose Plywood if you prioritise cabinet strength, stability and long-term use, especially for sink cabinets, wall cabinets or heavy-storage areas.

A mixed-material approach is also possible. Standard areas can use a more affordable Melamine solution, while high-moisture or load-bearing areas can be upgraded to Plywood.

Before comparing prices, confirm the core material, panel thickness, edge-banding method, moisture protection and hardware specifications.
